Baptism Godparent Requirements and Certification

	Godparents proclaim during the Baptism Liturgy that they promise to be a Christian role model and will take up the responsibility of assisting and supporting the parents in seeing that the newly baptized child becomes a part of a life-giving Christian community, receives religious education, and develops a personal relationship with Christ. One Catholic godparent is sufficient; but there may be two, one of each sex. Godparents must be suitable for this role and have the intention of fulfilling it, be at least 16 years of age and a Catholic who has been Confirmed. A baptized person who belongs to a non-catholic church community may serve with a Catholic godparent as a Christian Witness. Godparents can not be a parent of the candidate.
