NYCU (News You Can Use)

There is no school Monday as our nation celebrates the achievements and message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We encourage families to do something meaningful to commemorate what Dr. King worked and stood for.

ITEM #1: Variety Show Confusion

There are two dates floating around for this year’s Variety Show. The original application that Ms. Keenon sent home stated the Variety Show would be on Thursday, January 31st in the afternoon. The congratulations letter that went home this week stated it would be January 29th. We would like to honor the first date since some families already requested the day off from work based on the original communication.

This year’s Variety Show will be Thursday, January 31st beginning at 1:00 PM.

ITEM #2: Catholic Schools Week

The schedule of events for Catholic Schools Week is attached to this email. Because there are so many details to the week, we will send home a paper copy of the schedule in next week’s family folder. We hope that you can join us for as many events as you can!

ITEM #3: Family Picnic

Last year we added a new event to Catholic Schools Week—Family Picnic! It was such a hit we want to continue it. Here is a little more about the event:

Before the Variety Show on Thursday, January 31st we will have a school family picnic in the commons. This is an opportunity to eat lunch with your child/ren. Bring a blanket and picnic basket/lunch. The lunch can be homemade or it can be food from a fast food restaurant. Tables will be provided for those unable to sit on the floor.

If you are unable to attend, please make arrangements for your child/ren to eat with another family. During both lunch times, space is guaranteed for those designated by last names. In the event a family can’t make their designated time, accommodations can be made for them to join the other lunch slot, but space is limited.

The lunch schedule for the day will be:

Last Name A-K: 11:15-11:45 AM

Last Name L-Z: 12:00 – 12:30 PM

ITEM #4: Catholic Schools Week Open House

In your family folder yesterday you should have received an informational postcard that includes a St. Raymond pencil. We distributed these postcards to the spectators at the Light Up the Holiday Parade.

We had extras and ask our current families to pass this postcard on to friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. The number one way that new families decide on a school is the word of mouth affirmation a current family gives. Help us grow our school! It makes us stronger and more vibrant!

ITEM #5: Teacher for the Day

As we turn the page to a new year, we turn our attention towards preparation for Catholic Schools Week. One key tradition we hold here at St. Ray’s during Catholic Schools Week is teacher for the day. Teacher for the day is scheduled for Wednesday, January 30th. We encourage any student who won this item at OktoberFest to connect with the teacher or staff member in order to begin planning the day. More details regarding Catholic Schools Week will be forthcoming!

ITEM #6: Yearbook Moderator/Coordinator Needed

We are in need of a Yearbook Coordinator. There is a small stipend that is provided for overseeing the construction of our yearbook. No experience is necessary. The only requirements would be a love for St. Ray’s, attention to detail and time. If you are interested in this opportunity, please reach out to Ms. Hill at

ITEM #7: Remembering ‘G’ Fundraiser

Attached to this email is a flyer for a fundraiser at Joliet Catholic Academy. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit JCA Scholarships and initiatives in memory of Andrew Giaudrone. Andrew was a graduate of St. Ray’s Class of 2006 and was an alumnus of Joliet Catholic Academy. In September of 2011, he was playing with basketball with the ‘old guys’, who played every Sunday night in our gym. Andrew suffered a massive heart attack and died on the spot at age 20. This fundraiser is in his honor. Please consider participating if your time and funds allow.

ITEM #8: $1 dress down day
