News You Can Use (NYCU)

Thank you to everyone for their patience and understanding this past week as we dealt with so many weather related issues. We were so excited to have everyone back with us today! Our celebration of Catholic Schools Week centered on Kindness and it was such a beautiful reminder of how simple it is to bring about Christ’s light and love to the world! Be sure to ask your child about our assembly with Matt Wilhelm this morning and about our kick off to Kindness Week (beginning February 11th).

Here is a reminder of what is happening next week as we make up the days for Catholic Schools Week:

Monday: Student Appreciation Day! Students may come dressed in pajamas or comfy clothes. Spelling bee will be at 1 PM in the gym for the 5th-8th graders. All are welcome!

Tuesday: Parent Appreciation Day! It is Ultimate fan day for the kids! They may dress in their favorite t-shirt, sweatshirt, or jersey from their favorite sports team, movie, you name it, along with hats. (No costumes) We invite parents to join us for coffee and donuts in the Commons beginning at 7:30 AM. It is also family picnic lunch and Variety show!

Wednesday: We celebrate gratitude! Teachers for the Day will be doing a variety of activities that show gratitude for the many people who make St. Raymond a joyful community. Dress is regular uniform except for those who are teacher for the day.

ITEM #1: Fun Fair

Join us for fun fair tomorrow!!! It is from 11-2 in the Commons and Gym. Fun Fair is sponsored by our Home and School Association. It includes carnival games, prizes, cake walk, candy bar, bingo, bounce house, face painting, and TCBY ice cream. The cost is $10 a child or $25 maximum per family. We hope to see many of you at Fun Fair!

ITEM #2: Family Picnic

The family picnic will be Tuesday, February 5th in the Commons. Please don’t forget to bring a blanket and picnic basket/lunch. The lunch can be homemade or it can be food from a fast food restaurant. Tables will be provided for those unable to sit on the floor.

If you are unable to attend, please make arrangements for your child/ren to eat with another family. During both lunch times, space is guaranteed for those designated by last names. In the event a family can’t make their designated time, accommodations can be made for them to join the other lunch slot, but space is limited.

The lunch schedule for the day will be:

Last Name A-K: 11:15-11:45 AM

Last Name L-Z: 12:00 – 12:30 PM

We expect that fast food restaurants around St. Raymond will be busy. Please plan accordingly.

ITEM #3: Kindness Week

As part of our year of JOY, we wanted to find concrete ways for our students to experience JOY as an action, rather than a feeling. To this end, we will be celebrating Kindness Week beginning February 11th. We will have several opportunities for our students during this week. A full flyer will go home next week in the family folder with all the details. In the meantime, one part of Kindness Week is a personal Random Acts of Kindness Challenge. We are encouraging every student to either create a BINGO by doing 5 random acts of kindness OR complete all 25 acts on the attached handout. Every student is being given a handout that either went home in the folder today or will go home on Monday. If students challenge themselves to do all 25 acts of kindness, they were encouraged to pace themselves and make a plan for completing all 25 so that they are done out of love and not simply an item to check off on a list. We are excited to see the fruits of this effort and can’t wait to see how many random acts of kindness our students can do!

ITEM #4: Winter Raffle

Winter Raffle Tickets was sent home today in the family folder. If you did not get them, please check with your child first, then inquire with the office. Every family is expected to buy/sell 35 tickets or $350 worth. The tickets and money are due no later than Friday, February 22nd.

Some families chose to pay for their raffle tickets through FACTs. If you selected this option, please write on the outside of the envelope “Payment made through FACTs” and then return the envelope with your raffle tickets filled out to the office. Janet Seddon, our book keeper, will confirm payment(s) have been received.

Thank you in advance for supporting this important fundraiser!

ITEM #5: Spaghetti Dinner T-shirts

Our 15th annual Spaghetti dinner is scheduled for Friday, March 1st! On this day students are allowed to dress down if they have purchased this year’s Spaghetti dinner t-shirt. Past t-shirts are not allowed since the purpose of this is to support and thank our sponsors.

Order forms are due next Friday, February 8th!

If you do not want to purchase a spaghetti dinner t-shirt, your child should come in their regular uniform on March 1st.

ITEM #6: For 8th grade parents—Graduation Picture Proofs

Graduation picture proofs went home in the folder today. Order forms are due back to school by Thursday, February 14th. If you are not satisfied with your child’s picture or if your child was absent on picture day, re-takes are scheduled for Tuesday, February 19th.

ITEM #8: Financial Aid

The Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) provides need-based tuition assistance grants for families in the Diocese of Joliet. This is a separate application from Empower Illinois. The deadline to complete this is Friday, March 1st.

The application can be found at: St. Ray’s school code is 2277. There is a $35 fee for submitting the application.

Once an online application has been completed, the following information will need to be sent/uploaded to FACTS to complete the application:

·Copies of most recent Federal tax forms including all supporting tax schedules (this could be 2017 if you have not filed your taxes yet)

·Copies of W-2 forms for both parents (MUST BE 2018)

·Copies of supporting documentation for Social Security Income, Welfare, Child Support, Food Stamps, Workers’ Compensation, and TANF

Please note the March 1st is a hard deadline. The Catholic Education Foundation reviews all applications submitted by that date and families are notified by the end of April if they have been awarded a scholarship.

If a family does not qualify for a scholarship through the CEF, then the application will be reviewed for a scholarship through the Cathedral of St. Raymond Endowment Fund. Priority is given to those families who submit by March 1st. St. Raymond Endowment Fund Scholarship recipients are notified by the end of May/beginning of June.

If you were awarded a grant or scholarship last year, you must reapply!
