YCU (News You Can Use)

For those who are new, each week in your email inbox you will receive ‘News You Can Use’ (NYCU). NYCU comes out each Friday in follow up to the Thursdayfolder. Please take the time to read the email carefully as it will contain important information from the front office. It is also important to check the attachment. Not all papers get sent home in the folder and the complete folder can be found in the attachment. In addition, you can log in to School Speak and there is a tab with all past NYCU.

Together we can make sure your child doesn’t miss out on anything!

ITEM #1: Back to School Night

Join us for our annual Back to School Night! It is scheduled for this THURSDAY, August 30th. We will begin promptly at 6 PM with a prayer and welcome. See the attached agenda for a full schedule.

ITEM #2: 8th Grade Parent Meeting

Following Back to School Night, at 7:45 PM, we will have a brief 8th grade parent meeting. Our agenda includes the details of all the 8th grade events as well as the requirements necessary to participate in the events. Please make every effort to attend!

ITEM #3: Packet Pick Up Forms

Please return all completed forms from packet pick up to the office no later than Friday, August 31st.

ITEM #4: Parent/Student Handbook

The following link will take you to the 2018-2019 Parent/Student Handbook. The Parent/Student Handbook can also be found on School Speak and will be posted to our website early next week. Please take the time to review. You will notice a new layout. In next week’s Thursday folder, we will send home the acknowledgement form. Please sign and return to the homeroom teacher of your oldest or only child at St. Raymond. Because of the length, the handbook is only distributed digitally. If you would like a hard copy of the handbook, there is a $5 fee.

ITEM #5: First Two Weeks of School

The first two weeks of school is critically important to the success of the rest of the school year. Teachers have been instructed to use these first two weeks to build relationships, set expectations for learning, and set and reinforce the routines for classroom management and curriculum implementation. It may appear that the content work is light now, but the work they are doing will allow for far greater learning and at deeper depths than if they simply just jumped into the content. For this reason, the first grade posting will not happen until Monday evening, September 11th.

ITEM #6: Fall Sports Update

Fall sports are under way at St Ray's. Both the baseball team and cross country team have begun their seasons. Girls volleyball and flag football will begin in the next few weeks. Please see below for information on flag football and volleyball.

5/6th grade flag football- We only had 10 boys show interest in participating in 5/6th grade flag football. In order to field a team, we need an additional 5-6 players. Please contact Mike Kelley at ASAP if your son is interested in competing. In addition, we are still looking for a coach at this level

7/8th grade flag football- The first practice for 7/8 grade will take place on Friday, Aug 31st at Farragut School from 3:15-5.

5th grade girls volleyball- Games begin Sept 8th. We are still looking for a coach for this group. Please contact Mike Kelley if interested.

6th grade volleyball- First practice is scheduled for Friday, Aug 24th from 3-4:30.

7th grade volleyball-There will be two 7th grade teams. Tryouts for the 7th grade team is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug 28th from 3-4:30. Everyone at the tryout will be assigned to a team following the tryout.

8th grade volleyball- First practice is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug 28th from 7:30-9:00.

Please be aware that in order to participate in sports, all athletes must have a physical. In addition, a $75 participation fee is required. Coaches will hand out parent letters, insurance forms and concussion forms at the first practice.

ITEM #7: Book Fair

We will be having a Back to School Book Fair next week beginning on Monday. Students will going during the day during their regularly scheduled library time. We encourage you to take this opportunity to stock up on books! Forty percent of what is sold in the book fair comes back to St. Ray’s in the form of Scholastic Dollars. This funding will allow us to purchase books for classroom libraries. Let’s put some great literature in the hands of our children! Thank you in advance for supporting the book fair!

ITEM #8: EDS Help

We are looking to hire an additional person to work in our afternoon extended day program (EDS). We are in particular need on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. If you or someone you know (college age or older) is interested, please reach out to Ms. Hill, Pay is commensurate with education and experience.

ITEM #9: OktoberFEST Volunteering

Oktoberfest planning is underway and we are looking for awesome volunteers to make the night special. We can't do it without you. If you have a moment, click the link below and sign up for Oktoberfest 2018. If you have any questions, please contact Mandy Kubinski, head of volunteer coordination.

ITEM #10: St. Raymond Nonnatus Feast Day

Friday, August 31st is the feast day of St. Raymond Nonnatus. Bishop Conlon will be here to celebrate our weekly children’s mass with us. It begins at 8 AM. All are welcome to join!
