News You Can Use (NYCU)

While the weather tried to deter our efforts with Catholic Schools Week, we persevered and enjoyed our activities this past week. So many people go in to making CSW a week of great joy and gratitude. Thank you to Tracy Pollack and all her efforts with student pancake lunch and for bringing Matt Wilhelm to share his message of kindness.

The CSW committee this year was made up of Mrs. Christiansen, Mrs. Kaput, Mrs. Ratajczak and Mrs. Jacoby. Their creativity, organization, and flexibility made all the events possible. We are deeply thankful to them!

Last, but certainly not least, we want to thank all of our families who made our family picnic an amazing event!

ITEM #1: Kindness Week

As part of our year of JOY, we wanted to find concrete ways for our students to experience JOY as an action, rather than a feeling. To this end, we are celebrating Kindness Week beginning tomorrow. A full flyer was sent home in the family folder with all the details.

As mentioned last week, one part of Kindness Week is a personal Random Acts of Kindness Challenge. We are encouraging every student to either create a BINGO by doing 5 random acts of kindness OR complete all 25 acts on the attached handout. Every student is being given a handout that either went home in the folder today or will go home on Monday. If students challenge themselves to do all 25 acts of kindness, they were encouraged to pace themselves and make a plan for completing all 25 so that they are done out of love and not simply an item to check off on a list. We are excited to see the fruits of this effort and can’t wait to see how many random acts of kindness our students can do!

ITEM #2: Parent Thank You Video

As part of Catholic Schools Week, Mrs. Byrd helped organize a lip sync video compilation of all the grades to thank our parents. The link sent in the original email needed permission to view it. Here is a link that should open without asking for permission:

ITEM #3: Valentine’s Day Parties

The Valentine’s Day parties are scheduled for Thursday, February 14th at 2:15. In honor of St. Valentine, students may dress down if they wear pink or red.

ITEM #4: Spaghetti Dinner T-Shirt

Spaghetti t-shirt order forms were due Friday. If you forgot, the absolute last day order forms will be accepted is Monday. Please note to dress down on Thursday, March 1, 2019, students must wear the 2019 version of the spaghetti dinner t-shirt. The purpose is to support and thank the sponsors of this year’s event. This year we also have a new design!

ITEM #5: Box Top Turn In

Friday is a Box Top Turn In deadline. All money earned from the box tops supports the many things HSA does for our school.

ITEM #6: For 8th grade parents—Graduation Picture Proofs

Graduation picture proofs went home in the folder today. Order forms are due back to school by Thursday, February 14th. If you are not satisfied with your child’s picture or if your child was absent on picture day, re-takes are scheduled for Tuesday, February 19th.

ITEM # 7: Track and Field Parent Meeting

There will be a track and field meeting for parents of 5th-8th grade students interested in participating in our inaugural season on Monday, February 11th at 6:30 pm in the Commons. Questions can be directed to Katie Remer at

ITEM #8: Financial Aid

The Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) provides need-based tuition assistance grants for families in the Diocese of Joliet. This is a separate application from Empower Illinois. The deadline to complete this is Friday, March 1st.

The application can be found at: St. Ray’s school code is 2277. There is a $35 fee for submitting the application.

Once an online application has been completed, the following information will need to be sent/uploaded to FACTS to complete the application:

·Copies of most recent Federal tax forms including all supporting tax schedules (this could be 2017 if you have not filed your taxes yet)

·Copies of W-2 forms for both parents (MUST BE 2018)

·Copies of supporting documentation for Social Security Income, Welfare, Child Support, Food Stamps, Workers’ Compensation, and TANF

Please note the March 1st is a hard deadline. The Catholic Education Foundation reviews all applications submitted by that date and families are notified by the end of April if they have been awarded a scholarship.

If a family does not qualify for a scholarship through the CEF, then the application will be reviewed for a scholarship through the Cathedral of St. Raymond Endowment Fund. Priority is given to those families who submit by March 1st. St. Raymond Endowment Fund Scholarship recipients are notified by the end of May/beginning of June.

If you were awarded a grant or scholarship last year, you must reapply!

Please contact Janet Seddon or Ms. Hill if you have any questions.
