News You Can Use – NYCU

Thank you to all the parents who helped make our Valentine’s Day so special!

Remember there is no school on Monday in observance of Presidents’ Day! Enjoy it with your family and be sure to go to mass on Sunday and give thanks to the Lord for all that is good in your life.

ITEM #1: Kindness Week

We had a beautiful celebration of spreading the light of Christ in this year of JOY with our first ever Kindness Week. We extend a special thanks to Mr. Gregory, Mrs. Shemaitis, Mrs. Schwert and Mrs. Black for organizing and executing all the events of this past week.

There is still time to participate in the Random Acts of Challenge! The BINGO boards are due no later than Thursday, February 28th.

ITEM #2: First Reconciliation

Our beautiful and faith-filled second graders will be receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time this coming Tuesday evening. It begins at 6:00 in the Cathedral. All are welcome! Please pray for our young people as they grow in grace and mercy and come to know God’s healing presence.

ITEM #3: Raffle Tickets

Raffle tickets and money are due next Friday, February 22nd! This is our only mandatory fundraiser here at St. Ray’s. School families that do not return their tickets and money by the time of the drawing will have $350 added to their FACTS account. Give yourself a chance to win!

ITEM #4: End of 2nd Trimester

Next Friday, February 22nd ends the 2nd Trimester. All work must be submitted to teachers by 3 PM Friday. Report cards will go home Thursday, February 28th. We will offer optional parent/teacher conferences on Wednesday, March 6th from 3:00-5:00 and 5:45-7:00. Beginning next week, we will have appointment slots available in School Speak.

ITEM #5: Lunch Room Volunteers

We are looking for parents or grandparents who would be willing to volunteer in the lunchroom on a consistent basis. We need people who can simply be present to our students helping to open milk cartons and fruit cups, etc. There is always a paid employee in the lunchroom and the volunteer will simply support that person/people. There is no need to make a commitment every day, but we do ask for a commitment of a certain day each week and for a lunch period. Our lunch periods are 11:05-11:35, 11:40-12:10 and 12:25-12:50. If you are interested, please reach out to Ms. Hill at

ITEM #6: EDS Help

We are looking to hire an additional people to work in our afternoon extended day program (EDS). If you or someone you know (junior in high school or older) is interested, please reach out to Ms. Hill, Pay is commensurate with education and experience.

ITEM #7: Visitor System

As we implement our new visitor system, we want to thank all the parents who have been diligent in bringing their state issued identification with them when they volunteer. We will continue to have a transition period so if you forget your ID, we have the back up of using the paper and pencil binder system we used previously.

With the new system, it is important that volunteers and visitors check out of the office. The new system allows us to keep track of attendance. You remain in the system until someone in the office checks you out. When you exit the building, please share with Mrs. Prieboy or Mrs. Alt that you are leaving. This helps us keep track of who is in the building. This is especially important in the event of an emergency. Thanks in advance!

ITEM #8: Last Day of School

In the state of IL each school is required to be in attendance a certain amount of time. The state tracks this either through hours of instruction or number of days in attendance. The Diocese of Joliet develops their calendar based on the number of hours of instruction (minimally, 880 hours each year). This is why we often do not need to make any days up when we cancel due to snow.

Next year the IL School Code has changed this and only total number of school days can be counted. Therefore, if we miss school due to snow or cold, we will need to make it up.

This year our last day of school is Friday, May 31st. We dismiss at 10:30 am.

ITEM #9: 8th grade graduation picture retake

Tuesday is picture retake day for any 8th grader who is unhappy with their original picture or for any 8th grade student who was absent the first time around. If you are simply requesting the picture retake be with the gap and gown, then your child can wear their uniform. If you would like the retake to be in their dress up clothes, they can wear the dress up clothes to school, but then must change immediately after into their uniform.

ITEM #10: $1 Dress Down Day

Next Friday is a one dollar dress down day. Please make sure your child follows the expectations listed in the handbook for dress down days.
