News You Can Use – NYCU

On Wednesday, we began the holy season of Lent with a beautiful celebration of the mass. As a school, we have intentionally planned ways to embrace the three tenants of Lent—prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Each action is a step closer to the risen Christ.

We pray that this blessed season is holy and peace filled for you and your family. On behalf of the faculty and staff, we encourage our school families to take time to attend Sunday mass every week. Your absence would be missed and your presence would be greatly felt.

ITEM #3: A Message from James Grzadzinski, Director of Music

Dear Cathedral Grade School and Religious Education Families,

Peace to you! Each January, I have the privilege of gathering with brother and sister Cathedral musicians from the United States and Canada for five days of spiritual renewal and ongoing formation as part of the Conference for Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians.

One of the ideas proposed in conversation with members of that group that I found thought provoking is the idea of a Family Choir.

What does a family choir look like? It involves a child or children and their parents, some of whom may have previous choir or musical experience combining voices to praise Christ through sacred music and lift up the sung prayer of the gathered Church at Masses throughout the year. This choir would meet for one hour prior to the Saturday 5:00pm Vigil Mass for 5 Masses per year (October, December, February, April, and June) and prepare familiar hymnody and Mass parts for that Mass. All materials and vocal training would be provided. Participating adults would need to have completed VIRTUS training and the Diocesan Protecting God's Children requirements. Ideally, we could sing for our first Mass in June depending on the number of interested families.

I believe that a Family Choir offers a wonderful opportunity for intergenerational engagement within the Cathedral community, while giving us a moment to spend time as families gathered as a family of faith rooted in Jesus Christ. Please let me know if you are interested in this opportunity by contacting me via email at music@straymond.net or via phone at (815) 722-6653 x218. This is a great way to begin ministry as part of the sacred music ministry here at the Cathedral. I hope that many of you will participate!

Blessings friends,

James
